Based on a true story
The astonishing true story of transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf provides the basis of this Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. Using guile and elaborate disguise to fool both the Nazi and Communist regimes in Berlin, von Mahlsdorf successfully remained hidden in plain sight, killing off her previous persona Lothar Berfelde in the process. Playwright Doug Wright based this drama with conversations with the enigmatic figure, and premiered it Off-Broadway in 2003 at Playwrights Horizons.
Designed as a one-man play, local actor Matthew Alvin Brown, will portray over 30 characters within the production in a truly tour de force show that keeps the suspense building until the very end. Now considered to be one of the most challenging dramas for an actor to perform, it has seen productions springing up on both sides of the Atlantic in the USA, the Czech Republic, Greece and as far afield as Australia.
