The coming-of-age pop rock musical comes to Oklahoma
In 1991 American rocker/singer songwriter Matthew Sweet put pen to paper to work through the dissolution of his first marriage, culminating in his seminal break up album Girlfriend. Almost two decades later, its lovelorn pop ballads and singable melodies wrapped around a heartwarming, coming-of-age story written by Sweet and Lucille Lortel Award nominee Todd Almond, culminating in the chamber musical Girlfriend.
First premiering at the Berklee Rep in 2010, it now enjoys a regional premiere at the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, replete with an all female on-stage rock band! A modern tale of first love, it follows the awkward adolescent romance that blossoms between the self-assured Will and the all-star high school heartthrob Mike. Whilst Will is confident in his sexuality, Mike is still struggling to come to terms with his feelings against the backdrop of their rural town, and both must imminently traverse the rough seas from teendom to adulthood.
